A Chance to Survive: Relocating Sea Turtle Nests (video)

Every year, thousands of sea turtle eggs are laid on our Gulf beaches, and every year, thousands of tiny turtle hatchlings make their way to a new home in the ocean. The Deepwater Horizon oil spill has severely threatened this cycle — with oil in the water, these baby turtles almost certainly will die. But there is hope.

Over the past few months the US Fish and Wildlife Service has teamed up with numerous partners, ranging from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission, NASA’s Kennedy Space Center, NOAA, and FedEx, to relocate sea turtle eggs from Gulf beaches to the east coast of Florida. Nothing like this has ever been done before, but it’s our only hope to save these turtles. Check out the video below to learn more about sea turtles, the rescue effort, and the people dedicated to saving an entire generation of turtles.
