A shelled survivor!

A find from yesterday that is sure to make you smile: a hatchling Common snapping turtle (Chelydra serpentina).

What you see in the top left corner of the photo are the remains of shells from other snappers … that unfortunately died shortly after the eggs were laid – the whole area is riddled with snapper nests that have been raided by scavengers of some kind.

This little guy survived last year’s raids … let’s hope more from this year are still safely hidden away!
