Weekend Field Report: 15 snakes in 15 minutes!

This weekend was one of those weekends when you learned the hard way to make sure you always have your camera gear with you, even for what you think is going to be a quick walk. Why? Because sometimes you just never know what you’re going to stumble across and usually when you are unprepared, it’s a spectacular sight that you are going to be unable to capture properly (and will kick yourself repeatedly for afterwards).

When the rain falls down on Road Toad …

A few weeks with hardly any rain at all seemed to have resulted in a near complete halt of the amphibian migration. Since there was plenty of rain during the day, a visit to ‘Toad Road’ seemed to be appropriate.

This weekend in the field …

This weekend while out looking for snakes, I ended up finding a little something different under a piece of wood that I was hoping a snake was hiding underneath. Instead of a snake … I found snake food … or a deer mouse (Peromyscus maniculatus)… depends on how you look at the food web out in nature!
