    Threat Thursday: The African Penguin

    Threat Thursday today focuses on the African Penguin. This species was chosen because last week the Government Gazette published the Draft Biodiversity Management Plan (BMP) for the species. The development of this BMP is enabled by an act of parliament, through legislation that was passed in 2004: National Environmental Management: Biodiversity Act, 2004 (Act No. 10 of 2004). The animal lives in four counties of southeastern New Mexico and four others in West Texas.

    Amazing Species: Purple Frog

    The Purple Frog, Nasikabatrachus sahyadrensis, is listed as ‘Endangered’ on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. This recently discovered burrowing frog is the sole surviving member of an ancient family of frogs (Nasikabatrachidae) that diverged from their closest relatives some 130 million years ago. It is endemic to the Western Ghats of India where it is currently known from just five localities.

This species was first collected in 1947 in Guinea, West Africa,and not seen again until 2005 when a small population was found living in holes in marshy,waterlogged farmland in the Upper Guinea forest in northwest Guinea.
